SASC is developing an exciting and educational SCUBA trail for avid SCUBA divers.
Situated just kilometers from the confluence of two great oceans - the Atlantic and Indian Oceans - Walker Bay is home to a diverse and unique array of marine life. On any given day, a visitor to our shores/sea can see several regionally endemic catshark species, the endangered Southern Right Whale, spotted gully sharks and maybe even the elusive great white. Ranging from species big to small, an observant SCUBA diver can spot a multitude of beautiful invertebrates including the endangered South African abalone (perlemoen).
The SCUBA trail we are developing at SASC will enable diver's to actively participate in the development and maintenance of a local marine database, contributing valuable information on species diversity, abundance and identification. Along the meandering underwater trail, numbered cards corresponding to waterproof factsheets will help diver's unfamiliar with South African marine species identify and explore our sea. Photographs taken by diver's will be included in our database for monitoring and i.d. purposes.

A diverse array of elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) are found in the waters of Walker Bay. Diver's can spot up to 10 species of elasmobranchs in one dive! |

SCUBA diver's can actively contribute to the collection of scientific information to be housed in SASCs Walker Bay database of marine species. |
A diver looking closely at individual kelp fronds may spot a shark egg case just like this one.
