SASC outreach programmes are dedicated to fostering interest in all aspects of the marine environment
To promote understanding of the marine environment across age groups, cultures, and socio-economic classes, SASC engages in a wide variety of education and outreach programmes. These include:
- WWF Responsible Fisheries Programme: SASC has partnered with WWF RFP to deliver training to fishers, compliance officers, managers and scientific observers to equip all stakeholders with the skills & knowledge to apply an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (for more information, please contact WWF)
- Green Marine Hospitality Industry Training Programme
- Faces of Need: Sharks: in collaboration with the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, SASC is raising awareness about the plight of commercially exploited elasmobranchs through seminars and research activities (for more information, please contact Meaghen McCord)
- Responsible handling of elasmobranchs in South Africa's recreational fishery: seminar series and training (for more information, please contact Meaghen McCord)
- Linefisher Stewardship Programme
- Old Harbour Museum marine science programme for schools
- SASC egg case hunt
- Marine conservation (as part of the WESSA Eco-Schools Programme)
- Scientific coordination of the Great White Shark Festival (August 2007 & 2008)
- Displays at the Hermanus Whale Festival (September 2008)
- Stories from South African fishers - a compilation of stories SASC is developing to examine how fishers view the marine environment
