About this research
South Africa is an industrial shark fishing nation, landing around 99 species of shark, skate, stingray and chimaera in multiple fisheries. Our tagging research is designed to maximize species-specific data to support the development of sustainable fishery measures by the National Department of Fisheries. Our current telemetry work is specifically focused on soupfin sharks (Galeorhinus galeus) - a vulnerable fisheries species.

This project uses Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV), conventional tagging, acoustic telemetry and genetics to further understanding of the biology and ecology of commercially fished sharks in South Africa.
