We require significant funding to fulfill our mandate, whether for our research or outreach programmes. As a non-profit organisation (NPO) we rely on grants and public support to help us make ends meet. Our staff currently do not receive salaries for their work, and very generously donate their time to all our activities.

If you would like to assist us financially, visit our Donations page or Contact Us.

Why should you join?

SASC is a unique organisation which works to promote the conservation & sustainable use of marine life, particularly sharks, skates and rays, through an inclusive and participatory approach. It is our belief that conservation efforts have, for too long, focused single-mindedly on an eco-centric approach to conservation with little or no attempt to reconcile human needs with those of the environment.

By becoming a member of SASC your donations will help us work together with a wide range of stakeholders to help ensure the unique life in our World's Oceans is conserved for generations to come.

Our members play a vital role...

Your membership will help us continue to:

  • Raise awareness about the conservation status of sharks, skates and rays
  • Conduct research into the life-history, biology and ecology of these sensitive animals
  • Develop and implement our fisher awareness and outreach programmes to promote responsible and sustainable fishing ethics
  • Build capacity in the marine and fisheries science sectors in South Africa
Download our SASC Membership Information Brochure for detailed information on our membership types.

Record Data

In response to requests from recreational anglers SASC, in conjunction with Marine and Coastal Management, has developed a participatory data collection & information-sharing programme for club & recreational anglers alike.

In collaboration with Marine and Coastal Management, SASC is asking anglers who target sharks to assist us with the collection of valuable scientific data.  The purpose of this programme - the Green Marine Angling Programme or GMAP - is to encourage a sense of cooperation between anglers and South Africa's scientific and management communities, simultaneously promoting information sharing between the sectors and encouraging the development of cooperative partnerships.

The data collected by anglers will be used for the development of a geographic information system (GIS) database and information management system containing relevant distribution, biological and gear-specific information.  These data will be housed and analyzed at SASC, and will be used for informing scientific, management and sector-specific decisions.

Reliable scientific data are the key to educated management decisions.  Thus, we implore all anglers participating in the Green Marine Angling Programme (GMAP) to submit information that is detailed and accurate.

An important component of this programme is a training course specifically designed to increase understanding of the marine environment and promote a sense of stewardship for our marine resources within the South African angling community.  The course is based on the principle that each and every individual can make valuable contributions to conservation through responsible angling actions.

If you are interested in helping us collect data, download the files below.  If you would to participate in the training course, or if you would like more information on this exciting initiative, Contact Us
