With approximately 412,000 participants in the industry, recreational angler's constitute the largest marine resource user group in South Africa. Contributing approximately 2.2 billion South African Rands annually to the national GDP the recreational angling industry employs 132,000 people around the country.
These are some impressive statistics! This no doubt illustrates just how important the role of recreational angler's is in marine conservation and management here in South Africa. Historically, however, limited interaction between angler's and fishery scientists/managers has left many industry members feeling they have been marginalized by management officials.
SASC recognizes the value of including recreational angler's in the development of holistic management approaches. We feel a thorough, well-designed collaborative programme between our scientists and angler's will yield valuable fishery-specific data that can be used to inform the management process. This can be accomplished through training workshops that encourage open forum discussions between user groups and management.
We have designed workshops for club angler's that examine ecosystem interactions, data collection techniques and responsible bait collection methods, thereby encouraging an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAF).

Training Workshops
We encourage Angling Clubs around the country to become involved with SASC by participating in our Angler Training Workshop. We will provide club members with the opportunity to become invovled in the development and management of our species and geographic information system (GIS) databases. Contact Us for information on how to get involved.
